Fenofibrate Dosage and Indications

Fenofibrate acts to lower blood cholesterol by 20%-25% and triglyceride by 40%-50%. The reduction of blood cholesterol level is due to a lowering of the atherogenic ratios of the low density lipoprotein fraction (VLDL and LDL). The distribution of plasma cholesterol is improved, as fenofibrate reduces the total cholesterol/HDL ratio which is increased during atherogenic hyperlipidemia.
  • To improve the activity of lipoprotein lipase, so that the catabolysm of lipoprotein which rich of TGT like VLDL and IDL will increase as well.
  • The cholesterol HDL level will indirectly increase as a result of the decreasing of TGT-VLDL level as a result from the increased production of Apo-protein A1 and A2.
  • The effect from decrease of IDL cholesterol by acid fibrate indicate its relations with the increased VLDL and IDL on the LDL production to decreased.
Indications:
Adult: Hypercholesterolemia (type IIa) and Endogenous hypertrigliceridemia (type IV) or combination (type IIb and III).

Dosage and Administrations:
Adult: 300 mg daily one 300 mg Fenofibrate 300 mg or three fenofibrate 100 mg daily. When in spite of a hypolipidemic diet, the cholesterol level remains >4 g/L, the dosage may be increased to 400 mg. As the lipid concentrations return to normal, a maintenance dose of 200 mg daily can be recommended. The dosage must be increased to 300 mg daily if there is a rise in blood cholesterol level.

Side Effects:
